John Clarke lands at Beacon Associates as sys admin! Read how he did it!

Hello,

After a few years of searching, I have finally landed!

I am working as a sys admin / sys analyst / project manager / whatever
else IT is needed at Beacon Associates, a consulting company. They
are expanding into IT consulting and so my job combines internal IT
support with developing solutions for consulting projects. A wide
variety of work, lots of cleanup to do, but a supportive environment
in which to do it in. I started last week.

At the end of the day, job search today is about finding a needle in a
haystack, or rather, being THE needle in a haystack that someone else
is looking for. In my case, I am the beneficiary of what I would
call Reverse Networking. The hiring manager put out the word to his
network, one of whom posted the position on the list server. I took
a wild chance and applied for the position and the manager liked what
he saw.

I used a semi-functional resume, with a long list of achievements,
followed by just a listing of where I had worked and when. That
showed my breadth of experience and flexibility, which apparently is
what my new boss was looking for, more so than specific hands on
experience. In this case, while the job description had a long list
of requirements, the hiring manager did not really expect anyone to be
knowledgeable in all of them.

We had a great interview, we hit it off and that was that.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me out with introductions, and
industry and company info. It has been great to learn how willing
people are to help other people out, even with the most tenuous of
connections.
