I started work as a principal technical writer and editor last Tuesday at General Dynamics. It is a position that I first applied for last winter. I was almost hired then, but I had a slight delay in getting a security clearance. When the group needed to hire again, I had the clearance so they called me and the rest is history, as they say.
People have asked about getting security clearance. It's not something you can go and get yourself. You need to apply for a position that requires one. If the company wants to hire you, it will initiate the process. So, I would advise people who think they can get a clearance to apply for positions that have the requirement. The advantage will go towards someone who already has one, but it's the only way to get in the door. Don't be stopped by the fact that you don't have a clearance. But be prepared for a lot of paperwork and a lot of very detailed (almost intrusive) questions about your life.
Thanks to Acton Networkers for being there when I was job hunting!
