Francoise Hembert lands at EMC as a Senior Technical Writer!
Hi all,
I wanted to share with you the good news that I accepted an offer with EMC
for a full time position as a Sr Technical Writer.
This opportunity fell into my lap quite unexpectedly. You may recall that I
had landed a 3 month contract job. However, this job was cut short as the
company did not land the business deal they were hoping for, and all
contractors were let go.
Upon learning that I would be leaving, one of the developers approached me
stating that his wife, who works at EMC, knew they were looking for a
technical writer. If I was interested, I should send my resume to her and
she would be forwarding it to the hiring manager. That took place on a
Monday.
Tuesday morning, the hiring manager called me and I had a 15 minute phone
interview. She liked what she heard, and asked to come for a personal
interview on Wednesday. That interview lasted 2 hours as she also wanted me
to meet people who were involved in the project. At the end of the interview
came a surprise: the hiring manager wanted me to draft an "executive
summary" outlining the problems, solutions, and benefits thereof, of the
project we had discussed during the interview !! I didn't have to do it on
the spot (pfew!) but had one day to turn it in. Back home, I had to do some
research about what constitutes a winning executive summary (I had never
written one) and set out to draft the content she had asked for.
Her response was: "good job!" J
This was followed by a request to come for a second interview the following
Monday to meet the hiring manager's manager. All went well, as later that
week I received a verbal offer by telephone.
The official offer arrived yesterday and I submitted my acceptance this
morning. I'll be starting Monday November 30, the Monday after Thankgsiving.
How I got this job is a fine example of landing this opportunity through a
professional relationships, which is the essence of networking. What I've
learned is that you need to keep your relationships with people you meet
alive. And I plan to put this into practice!
Wbr, Francoise
