At Monster I designed a technology that would automatically match keywords between a resume and a job posting - allowing a job seeker to switch between the two so that their resume was custom tailored to the position - something essential in this day and age.
The technology never saw the light of day, although it would be incredibly useful. On Monster and the other major job boards, when an employer conducts a resume search, they see the keywords and sometimes semantically matched words on the resume HIGHLIGHTED to make it easier for them.
Without the same technology, it can be painstaking to go back and forth to tailor your resume to the position. Here's one tactic I've been exploring. What if there was a way to extract the key terms from a job posting to make resume enhancements easier.
Check out FiveFilters.org. Copy the job posting from a site, paste it into FiveFilters and you'll receive an extraction of the key terms in the posting. Here's an example, take this job for Dehumidifier Sales Rep that I found on Indeed. I didn't select the organizational hype or the information that wasn't related to what I'd put on my resume.
Note: After pasting the text into Five Filters, I selected Options (beneath the text box) and changed the Max Words Per Term to 6 so that it could do a better job of finding relevant phrases. Here's the result:
It did a pretty good job pulling out the key aspects to focus on in your resume. I could have limited the number of items returned to get a more concise list, but all that seems to do is to give me to the first X items. I wish they allowed for online sorting of results. The first column shows the number of occurrences (more occurrences may indicate an area of focus), and the 2nd column shows the number of words in the extraction (not really useful as you can probably count them just as easily if you really wanted to.)
The result, this could be a useful tool in helping you with efficiency and clarity for customizing your resume for your job search. Would love to hear your feedback and examples of how it has helped (or not) with your job search.
