Diversity Counselor Needed at No. Bennet St School in Boston
North Bennet Street School has enjoyed a reputation for excellence in education since its inception in 1881, and currently graduates students from full-time professional training programs in Bookbinding, Cabinet and Furniture Making, Carpentry, Jewelry Making and Repair, Locksmithing, Piano Technology, Preservation Carpentry and Violin Making and Repair. Courses prepare graduates for work in fields that require skillful use of hand tools and power equipment, the informed use of materials, creative problem-solving and a commitment to the highest quality of work. In addition to our full-time programs, we offer short courses, or workshops, ranging in length from one day to three months which are open to the public without an admissions process. North Bennet Street School seeks an individual to join the admissions department in the new role of Diversity Counselor. The Diversity Counselor will lead the school’s outreach into Boston’s Roxbury, Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, East Boston and other neighborhoods, increasing awareness of North Bennet Street School and the opportunities for education and training trades that are available.
The Diversity Counselor will:
* Develop and maintain contact with local community agencies and schools.
* Attend career fairs and school career functions.
* Identify and cultivate community center and church leaders who can advise and refer candidates for admission.
* Advocate for and represent the school in the community.
* Serve as a coach and mentor for incoming students and graduates.
* Track graduation rates and employee placement rates for the program’s participants.
* Gather data from incoming students and exit interviews to evaluate the program and ensure that objectives are met.
* Complete the traditional admissions ‘funnel’ reports to track number of contacts, follow-up visits, number of resulting applications and admissions.
The Diversity Counselor should possess the organizational and interpersonal skills, energy level and knowledge of Boston’s neighborhoods, neighborhood schools and neighborhood social service agencies.
