POSITION TITLE: AileyCamp Boston Guidance Counselor


REPORTS TO: AileyCamp Boston Artistic Director


DATES: July 2, 2012 - August 10, 2012 WORK HOURS: Monday – Friday 8am - 4pm *Evening Hours on 8/9 MANDATORY


STAFF ORIENTATION: June 26-28, 2012: 9am – 4pm LOCATION: Orchard Gardens K-8 School, 906 Albany Street, Roxbury, MA 02119


SALARY: commensurate with experience


 


AileyCamp Boston is a six-week, summer day camp that combines dance instruction with personal development workshops, creative communication classes and field trips. The goal is not to train students to be professional dancers, but to challenge the participants and to strengthen their self-esteem.


 


The Arts, Education & Community Program of Celebrity Series of Boston makes the performing arts come alive for young people in the classroom, in Boston’s great theaters and concert halls, and throughout the community. AileyCamp Boston is an initiative of this Program.

Duties:


*Teach 2-3 classes per day, four days each week


*Provide individual, group, and family counseling as needed and facilitate a safe environment for fostering positive alternatives to stress related issues and conflict


*Conduct daily group counseling sessions (as needed)


*Help in organizing with the Personal Development instructor special educational sessions on issues such as drug abuse, sex education, family relationships, and nutrition


*Participate as needed in the final camp presentations


*Participate in lunch duty, free periods and general supervision of campers when not teaching class


*Participate and supervise campers as directed on field trip days


*Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings and individual meetings with AileyCamp Director


*Provides the AileyCamp Director with a written evaluation of student's progress


*Provides the AileyCamp Director with curriculum of proposed class content


 


Qualifications:


Must have an associate or bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or related field. Experience working with middle school aged children, preferably in a multicultural community-based, or school setting is a plus. Must have a strong desire to work with children. Must have a lot of energy, flexibility, and sense of humor. Must have the ability to inspire, empower, encourage, support and motivate children. Strong limit-setting skills balanced with respect for the independence and dignity of children.


A degree in dance or equivalent professional experience required. Must be able to successfully clear a Massachusetts Criminal Offender Background Record Investigation (CORI) and a Massachusetts Sexual Offender Background Record Investigation (SORI). Must submit evidence of a physical examination within 24 months of the hire date, a record of current immunizations, and three letters of recommendation.
