This program allows unemployed individuals, 55 and older, to receive $160 per week while working and receiving training in non-profit or government agencies. The idea is to help older workers who have been out of work to begin working again and grow their skills while they are collecting unemployment and/or Social Security.
Applicants must be 55 years of age or older and willing to improve their job skills and learn new ones.
Applicants must be unemployed. PLEASE NOTE: YOUR UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE (UI) PAYMENTS DO NOT COUNT TOWARDS YOUR ANNUAL INCOME FOR THIS PROGRAM (see below). If UI benefits are your only income this program would consider you to have ZERO income in regards to qualifying for income eligibility. You can receive UI benefits and income from this program at the same time.
People retired and living on Social Security or other retirement income are also eligible. If you are receiving Social Security retirement payments, only 75% of that income is counted towards annual income. All SSDI recipients are considered income eligible.
Your current annual income cannot exceed $13,538.00 if you are single, $18, 213.00 if living as a couple, or $22,888.00 if you are in a household of three, with additional increases as members of your household grow.
This program requires participants to look for work while working/training with the SCSEP. Your training stipend of $160.00 per week is considered income by Massachusetts Division of Unemployment Assistance, and, if this amount is more than one-third of your UI benefits, your benefits may be reduced for any amount over this one-third level.
The program requires a 20-hour a week commitment but there is flexibility in how the hours are worked. Your hours are worked out in collaboration with your agency supervisor and eight hours are devoted to skill building and job hunting. Your work with SCSEP ends when you find other paid employment or you quit or are let go from this position.
WORKSITE: The Professional Development Collaborative Center is located at 1 Blue Hill River Road, Canton MA, in Trinity Episcopal Church which is near the intersection of Routes 138 and I-93 (Exit 2B). Occasional travel to other work sites may be necessary.
