As the last trimesters and quarters for colleges come to a close, job fairs are springing up everywhere. Companies are out to hire. Everyone still has a shot for an -- employment connection.
Keep your head in the game and check out a few do’s and don’ts to bear in mind on Job Fair day.
DO
DO – Dress to impress for the position and company reflective of your career goals. Wear business casual, your first day on the job.
DO – Research all the companies scheduled to attend and know what positions they are looking to hire.
DO – Bring more than enough resumes on the off chance, one of those smaller agencies may have an idea opening for you.
DO – Prepare a cover letter for the job titles you have already researched.
DO – Manage time wisely during the face to face greeting. Introduce yourself using a modified version of your 30 second-commercial and ask three to five questions about the position, company or trends covering your area of interest.
DON’T
DON’T - Grab a bunch of stuff for the sake of having another calculator, highlighter or pen. Be strategic in this process. Take momentos only from serious prospects demonstrating your options.
DON’T – Leave without a minimum of five hiring companies, considering you as a serious candidate. Stop at every table if necessary, until you are confident five employers will be interested in receiving your call.
DON’T – Forget to ask for a name of someone else whom they suggest you should contact.
DON’T – Spend a lot of time standing in lines where the business has marginal interest in your background.
DON’T – Overlook this opportunity of meeting, greeting and networking with others at this event.
This is ground “0” for your employment connection. Next stop, will be round one, the interview. Remember you’re a rock star, branded and refined. Focus on the end result and enjoy being yourself. People like working with others who have fun getting their work done. Good Luck.
