ORGANIZATION:
Founded in 2009, upSTART helps Cambridge students channel their energy, optimism and creativity through the hands-on experience of imagining, creating and running their own businesses.  Our young entrepreneurs will learn useful business and life skills, deepen their desire for further education, improve their career prospects, and have fun while helping themselves, their upSTART peers and their community.  Our young entrepreneurs are at-risk learners: students who experience a disconnect between their educational and motivational needs, and what their schools successfully offer many of their classmates, and who may be considering dropping out.

OVERVIEW:
upSTART is a privately funded 501(c) 3 that was incorporated in 2009.  upSTART seeks to hire its very first Education Director who will be charged with developing the entrepreneurial curriculum, using existing best practices as a model.  Such a creative and new venture requires a person who embodies the entrepreneurial spirit and has a flair for fun, which will be critical for keeping our student engaged with the program.  upSTART, Inc. is looking for someone who is self-driven and results-oriented and who can take a program from creation to implementation.  This multi-faceted role calls for someone who can manage, prioritize, and delegate multiple projects at one time.  With a brand new program, it is especially important that the Education Director be able to critically assess the structure, performance and progress of upSTART’s curriculum and services so that appropriate changes can be made, ensuring the future success and evolution of upSTART.  

REPORTS TO:
Executive Director

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Plan and organize programmatic and operational layout for entrepreneurial education;
• Develop entrepreneurial curriculum that can be expanded, adjusted over time;
• Teach certain sections of the curriculum and train fellow staff to teach as well;
• Create annual benchmarks to measure the program’s success;
• Lead recruitment efforts for youth, and assist in recruiting for adult mentors and local entrepreneurs;
• Assess and manage the program’s ongoing and future resource needs;
• Evaluate and report upon students’ progress on a regular basis; 
• Develop linkages with public and private Cambridge schools;
• Serve as the liaison to relevant Cambridge-based organizations, including the school system and youth centers, to ensure coordinated, complementary youth services;
• Participate in outreach and learning opportunities with community partners and/or stakeholders;
• Other duties as assigned. 


Qualifications:QUALIFICATIONS:
• Classroom experience teaching middle school and/or high school youth in a non-traditional setting;
• Experience in curriculum creation and implementation;
• At least 5 years of Program Management/Development experience;
• Ability to anticipate and identify problems putting forward solutions that are creative, innovative, and flexible;
• Excellent interpersonal, written, oral, and computer skills (including Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint);
• Sensitivity to and understanding of the needs of a diverse group of at-risk youth;
• Capability and desire to work collaboratively with an energized, committed and creative team;
• BA/BS required; and
• Preferred:  Personal experience with an entrepreneurial venture.  Masters degree in relevant field, i.e. Education, Public Policy, Non-Profit Management, etc.  Bi-lingual a plus.
