Job Title:
Director of User Experience
Background:
Projector PSA is a company that develops a leading Professional Services
Automation (PSA) suite that helps services firms efficiently manage
their operations. Projector supports those firms by helping them track
time and expenses, invoice their clients, schedule their resources, and
manage their projects. Our software is delivered on a subscription/
as a Service (SaaS) basis. As such, the product, which is a complex,
internet-enabled, transactional application, is hosted on a multi-tenant
architecture capable of supporting thousands of concurrent users.
Responsibilities:
We have been successful delivering a large and complex feature set with a
very small team because the team is experienced, tightly-knit, and
talented. We are looking to expand our development capabilities by
hiring a key senior resource to own the design of our application¡¦s
user interface.
We are about to begin substantially redesigning our entire user
interface and, in the process, will migrate our application from our
existing technology to Microsoft Silverlight. As we do, we will push way
beyond the typical text- and numbers-centric tag/value pair interfaces
that many dry business applications possess. Instead, we will be
implementing a much richer, more engaging interface that exploits drag
and drop, animation, graphics, and configurability to their fullest in
pursuit of satisfying the business users¡¦ needs.
Our Director of User Experience will be responsible for leading the
migration and redesign process both at a strategic and an execution
level. He or she will define the overall UI vision and define the
concepts, metaphors, and standards that will be used to shape the
product, and develop a high-level roadmap to guide the implementation.
This person will also design and execute the methodologies and processes
that will be used throughout the interface design and development
lifecycle. This will involve creating and validating the design,
building prototypes and/or semi-functional proofs of concept,
documenting and communicating the design to the development team,
ensuring the final implementation provides a superb user experience, and
incrementally enhancing the interface after initial implementation.
Because we are a small, entrepreneurial organization, our UX Designer
will also have the opportunity to contribute in other areas as the
interests of the employee and the needs of the organization dictate.
Skills:
Our ideal candidate will be well versed in or capable of learning the
following skills (in descending order of importance):
> Expert knowledge of best practices in user interaction design,
visual representation of complex data, information architecture, and
user interface conventions as applied to complex business applications
> Demonstrated experience building UX deliverables such as
wireframes, design comps/mockups, flow charts, functional
specifications, and style guides
> Solid understanding of the possibilities of and constraints
inherent in rich internet application technologies such as Microsoft
Silverlight or Adobe AIR/Flex/Flash
> Demonstrated ability to balance business/user benefit with
implementation complexity
> Ability to develop big conceptual ideas and to develop and execute a
plan to achieve that vision
> Knowledge of informal usability testing techniques
> Experience designing and prototyping in the Microsoft Expression
environment (especially Expression Blend) a significant plus
In addition, our ideal candidate must:
> Be absolutely passionate about the integration of design and
technology and about creating clean, intuitive, and powerful interfaces
that serve the needs of business users
> Possess excellent problem solving, logical thinking, and
quantitative skills
> Be able to work independently with little direction, yet integrate
well into a larger team
> Be able to learn new technologies and new concepts quickly
> Be comfortable interfacing with product management, business
analysis, engineering, QA, and production support teams and directly
with end users
> Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills
> Be able to accurately estimate effort and deliver to deadlines
Finally, experience with the following types of systems, industries, and
environments are a plus:
> Experience in the professional services industry, especially
delivering projects that integrate creative design with technology
> Experience designing user interfaces for data-intensive
transactional or financial systems, especially medium- to
enterprise-level systems
> Experience working with complex systems in production environments
Qualifications:
> BS or MS or equivalent background in human computer interaction,
interaction design, human factors, information design, information
architecture, or cognitive science
> Minimum 8 years¡¦ experience with user interface design, preferably
for business applications
