Unemployment Extension Hopes Crushed; Americans Left Confused
From the US Chronicle | June 26, 2010
Americans, hoping for an unemployment extension, have had their hopes crushed by the Senate last Thursday, as the legislation failed to come to an agreement on the jobs bill.
According to estimates by the Department of Labor, nearly two million Americans will be without any unemployment benefits by July 10th.
The unemployment benefits amendment on HR 4213, also known as the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act of 2010, failed to pass in the Senate as disputes between the Republicans and Democrats kept both sides from coming to a mutual agreement.
The status of the unemployment bill is unknown, leaving many Americans confused with what to do next. The bill was voted down 57 to 41.
The bill, if passed, would extend the filing deadline for those who are unemployed until November 2010.
It was estimated that the bill would cost $141 billion. There was no word when the Senate would meet again to discuss any unemployment extension.

There is still the possibility of passage at some point as the Democrats will not let it die, given the number of unemployed and the reports of "double-dipped" recession possibly starting.
