Older workers often have special consideration that can help them determine the types of employment they should look for.

You Will Need

  • An inventory of your likes and dislikes

  • A survey of available jobs

  • A job-search plan

  • Pre-interview information about employers

  • Occupational Outlook Handbook (optional)

  • Support group (optional)

Step 1: Make a self-assessment

Take
a personal inventory of the kinds of activities you like and dislike,
what things you do well, and what you enjoy doing at work and in
leisure.

Step 2: Identify jobs most in demand

Identify the types of jobs that are most in demand, and the employers that hire in those areas.

Check
the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook for
thousands of job descriptions, required skills, and anticipated demand
for workers in these jobs.

Step 3: Consider alternative work arrangements

Consider
flexible or alternative work, including part-time work, telecommuting,
consulting, entrepreneurship, and temporary work.

Step 4: Develop a job-search plan

Develop
a job-search plan that includes networking with people in the fields
that interest you to learn of opportunities and preparing a resume.
Consider upgrading your job skills by taking a class or even trying an
internship.

Step 5: Prepare for each job interview

Prepare for each job interview by learning as much as you can about the potential employer's business.

If
you feel that a potential employer is discriminating against you based
on your age, you have a right to file a complaint with the Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission.

Step 6: Consider joining a support group

Join a career or job support group if you lack confidence about re-entering the job market as an older person.

Did you know? Seventy percent of older workers plan to retire later than they had previously thought they would.
