Cambridge-Based Helicos BioSciences to Raise $10M in Placement . Could your place be at Heicos?

Cambridge, Mass. -- Helicos BioSciences, a Cambridge-based
developer of genetic analysis technologies for the research, drug discovery and
diagnostic markets, said on Wednesday that it plans to raise $10 million through
a private placement. The company said that it has reached agreements to sell its
stock to previous investors Atlas Ventures, Flagship Ventures, Highland
Capital Partners and Versant Ventures, as well as company CEO Ron
Lowy. The net proceeds, of about $9.4 million will be used to fund working
capital requirements, as well as to support sales and general corporate
purposes. "We believe that raising this level of funds is appropriate given the
recent demand for the Helicos Single Molecule Sequencing System while we
consider our strategic alternatives," said Lowy. The system allows scientists to
directly measure billions of strands of DNA, and carry out experiments never
before possible.
