Aug 25, 2009 - NEW YORK, NY -- In less time than it takes to find a new job, ThinkSelfEmployed.com helps people around the age of 50 who have lost jobs start a business of their own.
According to Gil Effron, lifelong entrepreneur and business advisor and director of http://www.ThinkSelfEmployed.com,
with so many people attempting to reenter the workforce, it could take
a long time before many find a truly suitable position if, in fact,
they ever do.
"This is particularly true for men and women around the age of 50 who are described as ‘overqualified'
"I know that people around the age of 50 have many highly
transferable skills and strengths they could put to work in a business
of their own, if they had the step-by-step guidance necessary to start
properly," he said.
Effron explained that an unemployed executive secretary, for
example, could take her propensity for being organized, orderly,
reliable, and a good communicator and leverage those skills and
attributes into a business as a virtual assistant. She could work for a
number of business owners or professionals who would never be able to
afford a full-time assistant of her caliber, but would be willing to
contract with her virtual assistant business.
Or an unemployed inside sales person with a friendly, outgoing
personality and fearless about cold calling could take his skills and
form a home-based telemarketing business that sets appointments for
several smaller businesses.
"Starting a new business isn't as easy as it looks," Effron said.
"With so much information available, dozens of distractions, and many
scams lurking in the shadows promising instant success and wealth,
knowing where and how to start can be overwhelming."
Effron devised an affordable 26-week program entitled From Unemployed To Self-Employed
that systematically helps people in their 50s identify the transferable
and marketable skills and strengths they could leverage into a business
of their own.
According to Effron, once those skills are identified, members in the From Unemployed To Self-Employed
course take what they learn about their skills, aptitudes, and life
experiences and systematically determine what their business should be,
what they could sell, and to whom.
The final step in his process is to build an action plan -- like a
mini business plan -- to help them get started and test the viability
of their business.
Effron says that his goal is to start people in a business quickly
and with a minimum financial investment -- sometimes as low as a couple
hundred dollars.
"I keep members away from pie-in-the-sky business ideas. Very
simply, my goal is to help members generate revenue quickly. I want
them to build on their strengths and validate that they're on the right
track in as little as six to eight weeks. Later in the 26-weeks, we
deal with all the customary and conventional issues pertaining to
startup businesses,"
Effron does not recommend that people give up looking for a job. "I
know that people can't spend eight to 10 hours a day looking for
employment. Instead of using their downtime to worry, they could start
a new business."
While government stimulus packages may ultimately help some who are
out of work, Effron felt he owed it to those people who are jobless to
help them take matters into their own hands, give them tools, and
provide them with realistic and practical alternatives.
