From New England Tech Wire | Aug 17, 2009
Framingham, Mass. - HeartWare, a Framingham-based
developer of miniaturized implantable heart pumps, has raised $55 million in a
private placement of stock. The company sold about 2.5 million shares priced at
$22 per share. HeartWare's pumps are designed to be implanted next to the heart,
avoiding the abdominal surgery generally required to implant competing devices.
It has completed an international clinical trial for the device involving five
investigational centers in Europe and Australia. The device is currently the
subject of a 150-patient clinical trial in the U.S.
