How to Install And Use The LinkedIn JobsInsider Tool

In my presentations to job seekers, I advocate strongly that they should be using the LinkedIn JobsInsider Widget.  Below are instructions on how to install it on your computer.  (You can try to install it on the library's computer, but they usually prevent patrons from installing software on the box.  Show them the value and maybe they'll let you, but many are uptight about things like that).

For those of you who don't know, the JobsInsider tool shows you connections you have at companies when you are looking at jobs on several of the major job sites (including Monster and CareerBuilder). And, because it's LinkedIn, the connections are through people you already know.  You can see a few slides on it in this presentation I made at Networkers for Work.

Things You Need:

  Computer with Internet connection

  LinkedIn account.  Create an account here

Firefox Toolbar 3.1.2 (PC or Mac): Microsoft Windows XP/Vista; Mac OS X 10.2 or later. Firefox versions 2.0 and 3.0.


• Internet Explorer Toolbar 3.0.3.1100 (PC only): Microsoft Windows 2000/XP. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and 7.0

Sign in to Your LinkedIn Account

1. 
   Download the LinkedIn JobsInsider tool


2. 
   

   Complete
   the install process for your operating system.

   
   


3. 
   

   Notice that the LinkedIn toolbar is now installed. Click on the "JobsInsider" button to open the JobsInsider side bar.

   
   



Search for Jobs



4. 
   

   Visit
   any of the job search Web sites compatible with LinkedIn's JobsInsider
   tool. These include Monster, Craigslist, CareerBuilder and many others.

   
   


5. 
   

   Search
   for jobs in your field. Look in the JobsInsider area to see if you have
   any contacts at the company associated with the job posting you are
   viewing.

   
   


6. 
   

   Use this tool to identify valuable contacts within the companies you are seeking employment from.
