Resist watching the puppy
From the Examiner
Hey,
since you're not working, would you mind picking up my cousin at the
airport? Or, since you're not working, would you mind watching my puppy
during the day?
When you're
unemployed, friends may be convinced you have nothing but time on your
hands. Yet looking for a job can make you as busy as a paying gig, and
you might have to resist requests to run errands or be the petsitter
for friends or family.Since I
stumbled into my new role as Unemployed Professional, I have rarely
lacked for stuff to do, whether it was to further my job search or file
for unemployment benefits. A human resources friend of mine in Ellicott
City told me I should be working daily to build my LinkedIn and Facebook networks. I should be registering my resume and maintaining personal job alerts on sites like Indeed.com, CareerBuilder.com, BaltimoreJobs.com, TheLadders.com, Monster.com, as well as the federal government's USAJOBS.gov and U.S. Army jobs site. I should be checking Maryland's One-Stop Career Centers and Division of Workforce Development
for upcoming job fairs and free resume update seminars. I should be
registering with temp agencies with local offices in Maryland, like Manpower and Kelly Services to learn what might tide me over until something more permanent comes along.I
should be writing my own personal marketing plan to be sure I'm doing
everything I can to tell the world who I am and what I can do. I should
be refreshing my portfolio, considering five examples that best
demonstrate how I've saved my former employers money or time or brought
them expertise they capitalized on. I
should be writing daily goals, and checking weekly, monthly and
long-term goals. I should be reminding myself that I am not my job, and
regardless of my employment status, I remain a contributing member of
my family and community.To
others, it may look like being unemployed means being idle. But if you
were to add to your calendar all the tasks I just suggested above, and
did each one, you would have put in a full day. And you would have
solidified the foundation that will get you the position you want in
the months or weeks or even days ahead.
