What is Your Resume Really Saying? Find out with a Resume Word Cloud

Recruiters do not read resumes, they scan them. It's been said that a recruiter spends less than 30 seconds looking at each resume before they reach a conclusion. Recruiters are also actively looking for reasons to reject your resume. Resumes are not, however, written for scanning. They are written to convey a complex summary of what value you offer.  Here's a way cool thing
you can do right now to see what your resume is saying:  Create a Resume
Word Cloud

Here's how.

1.  Open your resume.  Here's mine.

2.  In your resume, select and copy all the text.  Do a Select All
(Apple-A or Control-A depending on your computer), then Copy (Apple-C
or Control-C).

3.  Go to Wordlehttp://www.wordle.net/create and click in the box under the words "Paste in a Bunch of Text"

4.  Click the Go button under this text box.  Wordle will chug for a
second or two and return you with a work of art:  Your Resume as a Word
Cloud!  Wordle will remove common words like "and, the, or, etc."
Here's a word cloud for my resume:

Dan's all about Business

5.  You can right-click on a word to remove words you don't want to
appear.  For example, I don't need "Dan" showing up so I can remove
that.    You can also customize the colors, orientation, etc.  One
down-side is that it doesn't take into consideration phrases.

I'd like to ask you to post your word cloud on my site for job seekers: www.betterjobsfaster.org
I'm interested in testing the power of online social networking, so
please forward this to as many job seekers as you can so we can amass a
resume word cloud quilt!

Dan,

Don't forget to mention the power of the word cloud for job descriptions. Paste the description in and see the key words to that job, then put in your resume to insure you have those key words to get positive results when they scan your resume.

Remember that the average resume gets only about a minute or so to grab the attention of a hiring manger/HR rep. Make sure you are "saying" the right things to lead to your next opportunity!

Saw another great use for the cloud @ my Networking group....as an image for the back of your business cards.

I'm doing something wrong - can't get the impage to appear here?

In order to post, you have to upload the file to the Resume Clouds folder on BetterJobsFaster, then create a reply with an image in the reply message.  It's not totally convenient, but it can work.  Alternatively, you can add an image simply by clicking on the image icon in the Post Reply box, enter the URL from Wordle.net where your cloud is posted, and it will appear in your message.  Down side of that is that if Wordle deletes the resume cloud, it's gone.  If you post it here it'll stay here.

Best,
Dan.

I like how "developed products" sticks out, a little.

Wow, that's really interesting.  I love it.  It's interesting how the construction, financials, payments, and sales show up. I was a bit thrown by how big the word beach was until I saw Myrtle.  You know you can get it to combine words by putting a ~ between them (e.g., Myrtle~Beach).  And, you can right-click to remove words if my memory serves me correctly as well.  Let us know how your career advances go!

Best wishes,
Dan.
