While the private sector has dramatically reduced the number of jobs in the current recession, you might be surprised to learn that government jobs have increased.  Most of these increases have occurred in state and local governments, especially in education.  There's an excellent report on hiring trends in state and local government that you can download from BetterJobsFaster.  For example, North Dakota is a state with a large surplus of tax revenues that result from their energy production (gas and coal mostly).  As a result, their hiring during the recession is up 3.5%.  In New England, Vermont and New Hampshire are showing positive growth in government hiring as well.  Maybe it's time to consider a career in public service.  The work is fairly secure, the hours are usually manageable, and it can be a great way to be part of a community.

Wishing you the best in achieving your career potential!

Best,
Dan.
